Pomorie is a charming seaside town northeast of Burgas. It is best known for the Pomorie Salt Lake and the lake's healing mud - something to experience in one of the health/spa centers in town. It is located on a peninsula and it offers a few beaches to choose from.
Although smaller in size, Pomorie has plenty of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. If you are more adventurous - Nessebar and Sunny Beach ("Slunchev Briag") are not too far.
Here are some interesting Pomorie tourist attractions...
The Saint George monastery was founded in the VII-th century by Anhialo (Pomorie's old name) Byzantine settlers. Most likely the site was a Thracian sanctuary before that, as there is evidenced in the existing marble bas-relief of a Thracian rider.
Like most of the old Bulgarian monasteries it was destroyed during the Ottoman rule. Only a charred icon of St. George (dating back to 1607) remains since those days. The current monastery was built in 1856, and in 1945 it was extended with construction of two lateral altars - one of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the other - of the Holy martyrs Sofia, Vyara (Faith), Nadezhda (Hope), and Lyubov (Love).
Nowadays the monastery Saint George is the only active male monastery in South-eastern Bulgaria. It is located at Knyaz Boris I str, Pomorie, Longtitude: 27.61796594 Latitude: 42.56738382

Thracian tomb
This archaeological site is only 4 km west of Pomorie, in the area "Kuhata mogila" (Longtitude: 27.59633660 Latitude: 42.56734826). The tomb is believed to be built in approximately the III century AD. It is a complex of dromos, burial chamber and other rooms.
The entrance of the tomb is partially destroyed. Through it the visitors enter a well-preserved vaulted corridor (dromos), 22 m long. On both sides of it there are rooms. The dromos leads to the burial chamber, which is circular with a diameter of 11.5 meters and was built of stone, brick and mortar. In the middle of the chamber there is a hollow column with a diameter of 3.3 m and height 5.5 m. The column gradually extends to the ceiling and joins the dome. From the top part of the column there is natural light.
It is believed that this is no an ordinary tomb, but mausoleum of a rich Thracian family and there periodically have been performed religious rituals. The necropolis is unique in that its construction is based on Roman building techniques but the rituals are Thracian.
